Antique Wall Clock

Antique collecting is a common hobby for many people.  It has always been popular especially with history buffs.  You never know what you will find in your grandparents attic.  All covered in dust.  Until one day, someone tells you that you are sitting on a gold mine.  This is particularly true for an antique wall clock.
Clocks are very complicated machines.  Many of us take them for granted as just another way to tell the time.  However, a lot of people do not know that clocks have a huge historical content.
The history has a large part to do with craftsmanship in earlier times.  It is definitely not what it is today, where people keep their belongings for a few months and if they break they just simply go out and buy new ones.   Even though the history of the wall clock is nothing in comparison to the pocket watch, it still had quite an impact on the world.  It is unknown as to who created the first clock in America.  They had already been imported from England for a while, functioning on a complicated spring mechanism.  However, they were not for the common folk, as they were quite expensive and seen as a lavish item.
Clockmakers were very few in the beginning.  A lot of time was spent to create one single clock.  Having to make each piece by hand was costly, and not time effective.  Most makers took up second jobs as locksmiths or other occupations.   After America reached its Independence, clocks became more and more common, and smaller and smaller.  There were not a lot of people interested in having the large grandfather clock in their living rooms, and few could afford them so craftsman started making smaller clocks for the average household. This made antique wall clocks even more exquisite, and rare.
If you are thinking about purchasing an antique wall clock there are a few things that you should keep in mind before diving into anything.  Take into account that older clocks will have a hard time to work if they are not placed on a level ground.  Before you go and rush out trying to find an antique wall clock, you must try to find a professional to have a look at the clock to estimate its value and history.  It is very common to buy an old case in which someone has put new insides in it.  This is not an antique, other than its case.   If you are not looking to buy an antique this may not mean much to you
If you are wondering where to look for an antique wall clock, then your first stop should be your local antique shops.  You can give local auctions a shot, but it is hard when you are just starting out collecting older clocks.  You can try garage sales; they are usually the best place to find any type of antique at a good price.  This is because not a lot of people know what they are giving away until it is too late.
